From February 2015, the team of “I, an Oltenia-Based Peasant, Need an Education!” project started identifying and selecting the volunteers which will implement New Start concept in beneficiary communities, according to New Start methodology. People from different environments and social categories participated at 8 selection meetings organized by the team: students from Physical Education and Sport Faculty, students from Letter Arts Faculty – Communication department, Members of „Veteran Mont” Association, parents of beneficiary children and members of the local community.
During meetings, participants received information about what New Start means and were offered the opportunity to be actively involved in implementing this concept. Interviews with the project team were organized for 16 (sixteen) possible volunteers that got selected from these meetings.
The project team initiated a publicity campaign for New Start concept and made multiple promotional materials in order to ensure that the information regarding this concept reaches as many people as possible. Fliers were distributed during meetings with potential volunteers, posters were put up in focus areas of the communities where we work, invitations were given to parents of beneficiary children, and ads for recruiting volunteers showed up in the local paper and online on foundation’s Facebook page.
During 22nd to 29th of April 2015, 11 (eleven) Romanian volunteers, selected by Adina Stiftelsen Foundation, were trained how to implement New Start concept in beneficiary communities by Norwegian experts. Several themes of great importance were discussed during the training: childhood and its values; children's rights ONU Convention; stages in a child's development; dialogue theory as a communication method; the importance of playing in a child's emotional, social and cognitive development; attitudes and values; volunteer's distinctive character and case studies.
These training sessions had incredibly good results for both partners. Norwegian experts were pleasantly surprised to find that Romanians are opened to volunteer work and that there are people willing to help without receiving anything in return. Romanian volunteers gained new knowledge which will help them implement New Start concept and enjoyed the chance to know the Norwegian experts and their mentality. From them they learned the importance of small things, simple gestures, a good advice or just a simple handshake.
The Norwegian visit in Romania finished with a report containing impressions, general observations, recommendation, and conclusions regarding the practical implementation of activities from „New Start” concept.
