Project: “I, an Oltenia-Based Peasant, Need an Education!”
Project funded by SEE 2009-2014 Grants, within Romania NGO Fund
The value of the non-refundable financing: 215.015,58 Euro
Most of the families from Romania’s villages are fighting many difficulties. Often, these shortcomings related to lack of money, free time and worrying about tomorrow, influence the parent-child relationship. Tired of daily struggles, parents neglect children’s needs for affection and communication, needs that are essential in their development.
New Start concept, borrowed from the Norwegian partners who have implemented it successfully, aims at identifying and solving these problems. One objective of project “I, an Oltenia-Based Peasant, Need an Education!” follows implementing New Start concept in rural areas of Romania. But what is this concept and how does it helps the community?
New Start complete the social services provided by the community by offering parents knowledge about children’s development needs as well as practical advices on how to foresee and tackle these needs.
The concept promotes proper fulfilment of parental duties and provides support, friendship and practical non-financial help for all beneficiary parents. Families who have at least one preschool child and who struggle with many difficulties are the project’s beneficiaries. During the programme, which lasts 6 months, trained volunteers will visit the families for 2 hours, once a week.
The project already started in Farcas with identifying, evaluating and selecting the beneficiary families. The city hall, the school and the local hospital helped in selecting the beneficiaries because they are closer to the families.
Identifying the volunteers who will be actively involved in implementing New Start concept started at the same time. Members of „VETERANMONT” and „PRO EFS” Associations participated at the selection meetings along with students from Physical Education and Sport Faculty and Letter Arts Faculty – Communication department. Parents of volunteers and youths who have been helped by the Foundation through the years as well as parents of children who participate at the after-school programme organized by the Foundation in Goiești, have all shown their interest in getting involved with the project.
Recruiting volunteers has also been promoted through social media in order to reach as many interested people as possible. An ad was placed in the local newspaper with the largest coverage in S-V Oltenia region and also on the Foundation’s Facebook page.
The volunteers will be chosen following an interview and based on selection criteria pre-established in New Start’s methodology.
The Norwegian partners Adina Stiftelsen and Stiftelsen Kirkens Bymisjon from Bergen will train the volunteers during 22nd to 29th April 2015 and the implementation of New Start concept is scheduled to begin in May 2015.
