Project: “I, an Oltenia-Based Peasant, Need an Education!”
Project funded by SEE 2009-2014 Grants, within Romania NGO Fund
The value of the non-refundable financing: 215.015,58 Euro

During 26th to 31st August 2014, 3 Norwegian experts made a work visit in Romania in order to analyze the educational, social and financial needs of beneficiary families. The study was meant to accomplish one objective of project “I, an Oltenia-Based Peasant, Need an Education!” and that is: implementing Home Start concept in Romania. Family support and counselling for parents are two services provided through this program.

For 5 days, the Norwegian experts visited many beneficiary families at home, where they could observe the way, they live. After discussing with family members, the Norwegian experts learned a lot about the problems, needs and struggles that they face day by day. Families’ difficult financial situation influences parents’ behavior towards children (they cannot offer the attention children require because they are too busy working) as well as the educational and social development of children (without parents’ support and guidance children get involved in activities that allows the appearance of the undesired and hard to control influences on the children’s behavior.

Beneficiary children and families were happy about the visit and welcomed the Norwegian visitors with open arms. They showed them their house and yard, talked openly about their problems and at the end of the visit offered them something small from the little they have flowers from the yard or small objects made by children at the after-school activities.

The Norwegian experts were overly impressed by these visits. They understood the reality in which these families live and concluded that it is quite different to the image they created based on information received from Romanian emigrants in Norway.

A rapport that contains observations and recommendations for adapting Home Start concept in Romanian rural areas was made at the end of the visit.
